14: The Multi-Hyphen Method

“Being a multi-hyphenate is about choosing and strategising a plan of attack and having the freedom to take on multiple projects, not being backed into a corner.” - taken from The Multi-Hyphen Method by Emma Gannon.

Do YOU dabble in the art of the side-hustle?

The story of this book and I begins during my maternity leave last year. I picked it up at my local bookstore as I was intrigued by Gannon’s success in side-hustling and with an idea of starting up a freelancing business I wanted to see how it could work for me.

Fast-forward to now, I’m juggling being a wife, mother, sister and friend as well as a full-time jobber AND a side-hustler (and should I add Instagrammer??)

Can I truly achieve any work-life balance?

We all have a different idea about what balance should be.

Gannon believes that a ‘work-life fit' (rather than balance) is healthier through a method that encourages me to work less and create more with my time, being mindful and dodging the burn-out.

Considering that this book was penned back in 2018, pre-pandemic, I read this book in Jan 2021 and it reads to me as ahead of its time. I was emboldened by the ideas presented in the book and wished I delved into it earlier.

Nonetheless, sometimes the books you read present themselves at JUST the right time right? And Lord knows I needed Gannon’s no-nonsense and practical insight.

The Multi-Hyphen Method is a modern career guide that encourages you to define your own success in today’s changing world of work and an increasingly digital world too.

Top 3 things I learnt from the book:

⚡️ We’re allowed to have multiple careers and interests (even though old school bosses may not think so!)

⚡️ How to future-proof myself into this new world of work by always staying in ‘beta mode’ and cultivating a growth mindset

⚡️ Technology could be the tool to help me live a more fulfilled and creative lifestyle

I would recommend this book to anyone, even a traditional 9-5er, and you don’t even have to be at the stage of career disillusionment yet, as it’s a book that gives you permission and encourages you to be your very best.

And we all need a bit of that.
